TEST DESCRIPTION

The RS&A Crime Scene Bloodstain Pattern Analysis Proficiency Test assesses individuals' competency in accurately identifying bloodstain pattern types, as well as calculating the area of origin for an impact pattern. Participants are provided with location and close-up images of 10 bloodstain pattern types created within a mock crime scene. Participants must examine the images to determine the pattern type based on the provided OSAC bloodstain pattern classification terminology. The test will also include an impact pattern similar to those normally encountered at crime scenes. The analyst will be expected to determine directionality, angle of impact, and area of convergence for a preponderance of the bloodstains in the pattern and then estimate the area of origin by providing three measurements. Only the area-of-origin measurements will be reported. However, it is understood that the angle of impact and the area of convergence must be accurately measured and identified to provide an accurate estimate of the area of origin. In designing this proficiency test, the left and bottom edges of the impact pattern will be labeled with a ruler so participants know the correct orientation before attempting any measurements. The test assesses participants' adherence to established protocols and procedures for bloodstain pattern analysis. Feedback and evaluation provided after the test help participants identify areas for improvement and enhance their skills, contributing to the overall quality and reliability of forensic evidence analysis.

SUMMARY REPORT

RS&A is dedicated to continuous improvement and the provision of high-quality forensic products and services, with particular emphasis on proficiency testing. We recognize the critical importance of properly utilizing published Proficiency Testing Results, as they can either support or undermine the credibility of impression evidence sciences. Often, these results are utilized by various stakeholders, including defense attorneys, to challenge forensic identification specialists.

A longstanding challenge in this domain has been the absence of essential contextual data accompanying raw proficiency test results. Without insights into participants' credentials, experience, and agency processes, published results lack meaningful interpretation. To address this, participants are required to complete a brief online demographics survey before submitting their test results. The information gathered, combined with data from other participants, will empower RS&A to furnish the forensic identification industry with comprehensive insights long overdue.

By ensuring that published data is not only accurate but also contextually rich, we strive to enhance the integrity and relevance of proficiency testing outcomes for all stakeholders.
